iNavX: This is the only app, to date, that offers access to the Waterway Guide list of Alerts, Marinas and Anchorages. More data overlays are coming soon to both iNavX and other apps.
Off-topic content will be rejected.
The Marine Charts software also incorporates waypoint creation and guidance along custom-set courses, integrated weather and tidal data, and offline support so that charts and points of interest can be viewed when not connected to the internet.

Sailing enthusiast and computer science PhD Mark Hayden built the SEAiq suite of iOS apps as a response to his own needs. Fortunately for him, his needs seem to have corresponded with those of many others, and SEAiq has been warmly received for its straightforward approach since its launch in 2012. SEAiq doesn’t come with charts built in; instead its open system allows users to upload their own charts, whether ENC vector charts downloaded free from the NOAA or charts taken from other sources.

This past spring, Navionics came out with a new version of the app called Navionics Boating, which has all of the features of the original plus some extras. For example, it allows for Plotter Sync through which users can wirelessly transfer routes and waypoints from their app to a plotter. (Raymarine, Navico and some Simrad, Lowrance and B&G models are also Sync-capable.) It also integrates with the “Navionics Community,” a group of some 1.5 million users that regularly contributes to a directory of marine services, waterfront restaurants, magazine articles and travel guides. Most recently, this Community has been tasked with improving the charts of the East Coast by sharing its local information. Finally, unlike the old app, new chart regions seamlessly blend together with existing charts.
Charts Offered: They can be raster or electronic. The raster charts look just like paper charts based on NOAA RNC (Raster Navigation Charts) and the electronic charts are based on the NOAA ENC (Electronic Navigation Charts) charts. In the last two years, ENC charts have come into their own. Most of the chart manufacturers’ own charts now look almost identical to the ENC charts. The type you prefer is a personal choice although I prefer the electronic version for readability when under way due to text rotation and the additional information available after a click or tap on a chart feature such as a buoy or restricted area.
ETA to Each Waypoint in a Route: Why would you want it? Well, when running the ICW you might want to know how you’re doing at the Surf City bridge for their once-per-hour opening? Are you going to make it? Do you need to speed up or should you slow down so you won’t have to spin donuts in a narrow channel by the bridge. If you have a waypoint on the bridge, you’ll know the information you need. By the way, it’s never the next waypoint since the ICW is not straight; it’s usually the 4th, or 10th, or so waypoint that you’re interested in. Only two apps provide this information for a route: AquaMap and iSail GPS.
In practice, however, a difficulty arises : lack of display responsiveness. S-63 ENC charting is encrypted and application has diificulty in display charts when zooming or drag the chart. It often takes several seconds before the display be refreshed. It is inherent in this charting format. In return, processing of the data displayed on the charts (texts, objects, information) has been very carefully from the developer and provides a close reading of raster charting. You can see from the screenshots above.
